DJ Wawa presents Mixtape Club 008 - two hours of pure dance music magic, recorded live from a back room in New York.
So far Mixtape Club has been home to mixtapes that - for the most part - have been planned out, practiced, and pieced together at home. But when we started chatting with Wawa about ideas for a Mixtape Club entry, they made it clear they wanted to release something focussed on the moment happening live around them, inseparable from the dancers and club-goers that make up their scene.
From Fumiya To The Jacking Zone captures two hours of peak-time New York clubbing from February 2022, building a head of steam as Wawa jumps between heads-down drum tracks, house workouts, awkward breakbeats and tightly-wound basslines into complete euphoria.
Here’s what DJ Wawa had to say about the mix:
“Big up to the Good Room and big up to the Carry Nation. This is mix is live a part of a performance in the Bad Room on Feb 12 2022. A perfect example of some 100% pure Wawa. Genre hopping off the bat, stitching together DNA from track to track telling a story through the tunes. From Fumiya to the Jacking Zone.
“The Bad Room has all the tools to be an all-out party and on this particular night I was set up for success. Building the dancefloor dancer by dancer until it feels like they’re bouncing off the walls. They shared their curiosity with me and I was able to share my gratitude with them and I think it came together is one of the most electric vibes I’ve ever been in control of. It’s important to feel connected to the dancers in your city!
This also the first time I’ve presented a live set to be archived on the internet. Couldn’t have found a better home for it.”
There’s been plenty written and said about the recent wave of exceptional DJs and artists orbiting New York’s clubs, radio stations and rave spots in 2021, and it’s a real pleasure to host audio live and direct from one of those spaces, recorded and then re-recorded onto cassette for good measure.
